Insurance Exclusions
One of the most important things to do when buying insurance is to make sure you read the policy properly to ensure it is fit for purpose. Although the FSA rules on the selling and promoting of financial products means that your needs and requirements should have been assessed by your sales advisor prior to the sale, if you get overseas or in some kind of accident without the proper cover then the only person who will suffer will be you and whoever ends up bailing you out.
All travel insurance policies should come with a comprehensive list of exclusions explaining fully just what activities will cause you to be excluded from the cover you have paid for. Sometimes these can be restrictive to the point of rendering the policy completely worthless, such as private accident cover which won’t pay out if you are over the legal drink drive limit, even if the accident occurs on foot, in your house and isn’t your fault. Others will permit certain activities that you might assume mean they will permit others, when they don’t.
If you are going on a specific type of skiing or adventure holiday then really you need to bite the bullet and take out specialist ski insurance to make sure that you are covered. There are loads of firms that specialise in activity specific policies such as ski insurance or sailing insurance, and although they’ll be more expensive than accident cover for 2 weeks sitting by the pool, it is the only way you can be sure you won’t be left footing the bill yourself when you hit that tree.
